Note from Joe: The music group ABBA wrote a hauntingly powerful song called “The Piper” which is based on the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. However, I have a nagging suspicion that the song is about something far more sinister. If you “listen between the lines” of the song’s lyrics, you’ll notice many aspects that do not correspond to the story. The song might be referring to somebody else entirely. Is it describing some infamous person in history? Or could it possibly be an arcane description of a currently living leader of some sort? I do not know. I leave it up to you to decide. The lyrics follow. The song, which is on ABBA’s “Super Trouper” album, may be downloaded HERE (MP3, 5.35 MB).

“Sub luna saltamus” is simply the Latin form of the previous line, “We dance beneath the moon.”
What do you think — is this song simply about the Pied Piper? Or is it really referring to somebody else?
Send me email and tell me what you think.
