Note from Joe: We often say, "That wasn't really me," because the obvious truth (yes, it WAS me!) violates our delusional self-image.
The Mean Letter
Alternate rhyme iambic tetrameter, by Joseph K. Horn (b. 1955)
I tried to write... but in my stead
'Twas he who clutched my quaking pen
And laughed, then signed my name, then read
His own dark thoughts, then laughed again,
Then faded out with Cheshire glee,
Content to know that I would find
His letter, neatly penned by me,
And with my own name neatly signed.
