Each had a flowering branch in her hand,
And the other hand held a long, thin thread
From which they waved their big balloons
In a grand display of blue and red
And green and yellow, so alive and lush,
That all this pleased me very much.
With a large white butterfly covering her head,
There followed behind the girls a nun.
She showed no sourness in her face;
She would not spoil the girls’ own fun.
But her great blue robe gave a motherly touch.
This also pleased me very much.
How beautiful is the merriment of Spring!
How beautiful, too, the springtime of dreams,
If someone lovingly watches o’er
To keep a hold on passion’s reins,
And ward off sin. When seen as such,
Frivolity pleases me very much.
In the happy springtime of my life,
I too have gone about this way.
Blossoming trees I carried in my arms;
Like a crimson balloon, my heart sailed high
As from town to town I gaily rushed,
And all this pleased me very much.
My friends all worried about me then.
The bishop, too, showed anxiety.
They did not see that in back of me
Jesus followed secretly
And held the reins with a loving touch.
I knew, and it pleased me very much.
… The teenage girls hurried happily away,
And I climbed up on a bench to see
How their balloons in splendid hues
Of red and yellow and blue and green
Gracefully floated in a happy hush,
And it pleased me very, very much.
VALAMI NAGYON TETSZETT NÉKEM

Tavasszal Pesten bandukoltam
a nagykörúti forgatagban
s valahonnan szép süldö-lányok
jöttek sietve, majdnem trappban,
nagy lendülettel, piros-szépen
s megvallom, mindez tetszett nékem.
Minden kézben virágos ág volt,
másik kezükben hosszú spárgán
félméter széles nagy léggömbök
lengtek lilán, pirosan, sárgán,
zölden, fehéren, barnán, kéken
és mindez nagyon tetszett nékem.
Mögöttük fehér-pillangós, nagy
bóbitával ment az apáca
nem ecet-arccal s nem oly szívvel,
mely a gyermek-vágyat kijátsza:
vastag anya-szövetben, kéken.
Megvallom, ez is tetszett nékem.
Szép a vidámság, tavasz-jókedv,
szép a virágos tavasz-álom,
ha valaki vigyázva virraszt
és féket tart szeretet-szálon:
ne bukjon el a láb a vétken!
Bor, tréfa, báj így tetszik nékem!
Valamikor víg tavaszomban
így jártam én is, ó bevallom,
egész májusfákat cipeltem
a szívem lengett, mint bíbor-ballon
minden magyar-lakott vidéken
és mindez nagyon tetszett nékem!
Barátaim reszkettek értem,
a püspökök aggódtak értem,
nem látták, hogy mögöttem Jézus
járt titkon és bármerre tértem,
szeretetböl volt gyeplöm-fékem:
én tudtam s nagyon tetszett nékem.
… A süldö leányok elsíettek,
felálltam egy körúti padra,
hogy lássam még, míként libegnek
léggömbjeik lengön, dagadva
zölden, pirosan, sárgán, kéken
s kimondhatatlan tetszett nékem.
